The Haiti Project

In April of 2017, a team of 20, including both students and faculty, participated in an international service immersion trip to Haiti. One of the poorest countries in the world, Haiti has been plagued by illness and natural disasters. Participants both witnessed and served some of the most extreme poverty existing on this planet, serving Haitians through the Lifeteen Mission Trips. The team left on Monday, April 17 and returned Monday, April 24. Our primary work with Lifeteen Missions occurred on the mission base at the Saint John Paul II Center for New Evangelization. The crew participated in work projects like painting, organizing, making bags to deliver to Haitian homes, building, sweeping, etc. Off base, the group did a variety of other service activities from visiting the monastery and connecting orphanage, to visiting and talking with prisoners, to traveling to Azil a center where the poorest of the poor lives (mostly due to disabilities). Leading up to this project, each day, students learned about the grim statistics on education, poverty, and unemployment in Haiti. Each day, members of our community had an opportunity to pray for and support our dear neighbors in Haiti through their contributions.

Dominican Republic Service Immersion

Over the April breaks of 2013 and 2014, students participated in an international service immersion trip to the Dominican Republic, a developing country that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, the poorest country in the world. Participants witnessed and served some of the most extreme poverty existing on this planet, serving both Haitians and Dominicans in various ministries.

As part of Saint Joseph Prep’s emphasis on Christian service, social justice and global awareness, these international service opportunities are regarded as a privilege for our students who have already demonstrated an exemplary life of service and compassion for others. It is considered a year-long committment, in order to fulfill all aspects of involvement, from planning and preparing to fund-raising and serving, and finally, testifying to the greater community about this experience. The entire trip is funded by donations, and anyone can contribute to the cause.
