New Student Body President will advocate for students

by Skylar Coyle '25

As summer break is nearly here, Saint Joseph Prep’s 2021-2022 school year is coming to a close. Along with it, we say goodbye to our seniors and some teachers who made SJP such an amazing community this year.

Nevertheless, we are looking ahead with optimism to the next academic year. Our newly elected Student Council officers are already in the planning phase. To find out what they have in store for the school community, I interviewed Gigi Shokri ’23 who was elected the new SJP student body president of the 2022-2023 school year.

The TIE: What are you most excited for as being the new student body president?

Gigi: “As the new student body president, I am so excited to be in a position of advocacy for the students. Throughout my high school career, I have been very dedicated to making sure all students have a voice at SJP. This position has given me the perfect outlet to ensure this happens.”

The TIE: Is there anything in particular that you want to continue at SJP?

Gigi: “I want to continue building on the school community at SJP because I know sometimes it can be hard to feel. Pep rallies, Christmas movie night, and field day are types of events that build this community. Spirit week hype has always been a huge goal of mine, so continuing to get students excited for those via posters, Instagram, and more will be continued.”

The TIE: What is something you want to change or bring to SJP?

Gigi: “Something that I definitely want to implement is the fundraising for certain Student-Council-run events. Recently, Student Council sold shirts for field day, and because it had a cost, not every student was able to afford one. I did not like seeing this, and it sparked an idea: having student council fundraising so we can finance things like this. Some examples of this fundraising include, but are not limited to bake-sales, tag days, etc.”

As Gigi looks forward to advocating for her classmates, the entire school community welcomes her and her fellow student council members with much anticipation.

Student Council officers for 2022-23 are Gigi Shokri (president), Maeve Reardon (vice president), Brenna Daly (secretary), and Brooke Williams (treasurer).
