Technology

Technology at Saint Joseph Prep is focused on teaching and learning. Not an end in itself, but a means to improve and enhance the quality of our education, technology at Saint Joseph Prep is centered on advancing academic excellence. Whether it is an iPad for a student, a software program for a teacher, an Apple TV for a classroom, or a firewall update for a server, technology is used to better the experience of our students.

We have a secure wireless network, configured to give access throughout the building to all of our students and faculty. This connectivity is essential to providing everyone in our school with the tools they need to write, share, and review documents; to communicate via email (and other electronic means); to produce presentations, reports, and labs; to create and edit photos/videos; and to take full advantage of all of the resources found on the Internet.

We also maintain a 1:1 iPad Program! Each scholar at Saint Joseph Prep has his/her own iPad, for which he/she is fully responsible. The iPad initiative has enabled students to download and utilize the e-versions of a wide array of textbooks, giving them access to a number of large (and heavy) resources with just a few taps of the pad. The iPad Program has also challenged students to develop a better understanding of many software programs, giving them a kind of technological literacy that is essential in the 21st century.

Our classrooms are outfitted with Apple TVs, projectors, and other technologies so that students and teachers can learn cooperatively and creatively. Our purpose in bringing these technologies into our School is to make the classroom engaging and interactive, empowering our students to be full participants in the learning process.

At Saint Joseph Prep, however, it is about more than just having sufficient technology; it is about using that technology wisely and well. The responsible use of technology is one of the hallmarks of our program. Students and parents must read and sign an “Acceptable Use Policy” regarding all technology, and we are continually educating students about the advantages and opportunities (as well as the pitfalls and perils) of Facebook, Twitter, and other forms of social media. Students must understand that the dignity and value of the human person is sacred, and that whenever we use technology, we do so safely, maturely, and responsibly. In a Catholic school, we are blessed with the freedom to speak openly about the moral and ethical demands of our faith—the same moral and ethical demands that we believe are shared by all people of good will.
