SJP Baseball Closes Exceptional Season
After the most successful spring in program history, the Baseball team’s season ended yesterday with a loss in the second round of the State Tournament. In the moments immediately after a final out is recorded, it can be difficult to put in perspective the positives from a long season, but for Saint Joseph Prep Baseball, there are many reasons to be proud.
By finishing in a tie for second place in the Catholic Central League, the boys successfully punched their ticket to the Tournament in the last week of the season. It was a spring, in many ways, marred by injury, but the team showed impressive resolve in their ability to keep grinding out wins.
On Saturday afternoon, the boys faced off against CCL rival, Cristo Rey, in the first round of the State Tournament. Playing in Dorchester’s McConnell Park, the underdog Phoenix jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. However, despite hot bats and a strong start from Sam Wright ’20, Cristo Rey kept chipping away throughout the game. In the bottom of the seventh inning, with Cristo Rey threatening to steal the win, Raphael Hanna ’17 caught a line drive at third base to advance the Phoenix with a 12-11 victory.
This week, after successive rainouts Monday and Tuesday, SJP finally took the field against Lowell Catholic in the second round. Ultimately, the reigning CCL regular season champion proved too strong an opponent for Saint Joseph Prep and the Phoenix were unable to dig themselves out of an early hole.
For Ben Applegate ’17, Jack Brooks ’17, and Hanna, it was the last time they’ll button up a Phoenix uniform, and the seniors deserve credit for helping transform the program these past few years. Their dedication and hard work not only produced results on the field, but also showed the younger players how to prepare and play the right way. Although they will be missed, there is a young core of underclassmen who will carry forward this season’s momentum in the future.
Special thanks to the coaches Ed McDonald and Bart Paresi. Their knowledge and leadership helped to develop the boys as players, but more importantly, as young men who represent Saint Joseph Prep and the Athletic Department with sportsmanship and class.
Congrats to all our spring season athletes! We look forward to a successful fall, so make sure to stay active, work out with your classmates, and come back refreshed and ready to compete!
