STEAM Show 2017

The event formerly known as Arts Night took on an exciting new development this year as it expanded to include so much more of the STEAM curriculum and Robotics, affording the community with a unique and beautiful experience called STEAM Show! This celebration of the arts and art of science at Saint Joseph Prep transformed the school stairways and Phoenix Hall into a gallery of fine art and ingenuity. This year marked the fifth annual occurrence of an event like this, and the school was brimming with family, friends and guests eager to share in the excitement of the night.

As guests and young artists mingled to a backdrop of live music provided by Aleksandra Christie ’19, Xinyue (Helen) Miao ’19, and Ziyuan (Sam) Wu ’17 while admiring the creative work both inspiring and impressive, the evening offered a true gallery experience for our guests. The event showcased the visual art of the students in art courses at SJP, including: Introduction to Visual Art, Studio Art, Art Club, Graphic Design, CAD, the STEAM class, and the Robotics team.

In particular, the evening showcased the contributions of the seniors in Advanced Studio Art Honors, whose work was on prominent display within the Phoenix Hall gallery. Senior artists were on hand to elaborate on their work, including Ricardo Espada ’17, Min Hyoung Kang ’17, Ji Yeon Kwon ’17, Tessa Lewis ’17, Vova Quigley ’17, Jada Ross ’17, Dante Salvucci ’17, Ben Stratter ’17, Jonathan Stratter ’17, Bianca Tracanna ’17, Yuqing Xue ’17, and Ruolin Zhang ’17.

By the midpoint of the evening, the audience was regaled by members of the spring musical singing the title song of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, thanks to the direction of Ms. Griffith and Ms. Becker. Under the direction of Mr. Shiner, the A Cappella singers, including Bella Belarmino ’19, Chuning Gao ’19, Lyndsey Grier ’18, Anthony Khoory ’19, Annie McElroy ’19, Xinyue Miao ’19, Sophia Pappas ’19, Gabriella Ribeiro ’19 and Jessica Sitcawich ’19, then offered their rendition of “Royals” by Lorde. Finally, the musical interlude was closed by Joadly Duplan ’17, Chuning Gao, and Anthony Khoory singing the dramatic and beautiful “I Love You” song from the musical.

The work remains on display throughout May and a full gallery slideshow of student work is now available on our website!

Thanks to the faculty of the fine arts department, student gallery assistants, parents, and especially to our art teachers, whose countless hours of instruction, guidance, preparation, and set-up, made this a most memorable evening!
