Phoenix Winter Sports on the Rise!

Although the weather may turned bitterly cold, life around the Phoenix Athletic Department has been heating up! Now well into the second full month of the winter season, Saint Joseph Prep’s student-athletes have been hard at work on the court, on the ice, and in the pool.

Both the Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams jumped out to fast starts this season. The boys have recorded wins versus Presentation of Mary, Notre Dame Cristo Rey, and Marian. Jonathan Stratter ’17 and Jacob Bianculli ’18 lead the team in scoring, while several 9th and 10th graders are making their presence felt, showing much promise for the future. The girls are now 5-2, having defeated St. Clement and Marian, as well as other non-league opponents. Captains JoJo Duplan ’17, Sharon King ’17, and Hannah Sansone ’18 have been leading the way with both their leadership and on-court production.

Down at Warrior Ice Arena, the Boys’ Hockey team has skated to a 3-2-1 record to start the season. Andrew Stefura ’19 is filling up the stat sheet with 8 goals and 6 assists through the first six games, while Sean Horan ’17 and Jack O’Dea ’19 have formed a formidable duo between the pipes. Unfortunately, the girls have experienced a rash of injuries and are still looking for their first W. Katie Honan ’19 leads the team in goals scored, while younger sister Mary Honan ’20 has played exceptionally well in net.

Finally, the Swim team has been grinding out laps at the Kennedy Pool in Somerville. Captain Theresa Sandbrook ’17 has already qualified for North Sectionals in the 100-yard breaststroke with an impressive time of 1:18:00, while Anthony Khoory ’19 has demonstrated tremendous commitment to the team by learning new strokes. The Girls’ relay teams have been swimming well and are only seconds off the pace to qualify for North Sectionals.
